Enspec is working on a Low Energy Automated Networks (LEAN) project with SSEN aimed at reducing electrical losses on 33kV/11kV networks.

The problem in detail

Transformer operation results in an ongoing state of energy consumption due to energising the core of each transformer (known as no-load losses).

Finding the solution

One aspect of the LEAN project will look at reducing these losses by switching off some transformers using a Vizimax SynchroTeq MV to control transformer switching.

This will minimise inrush currents during energisation through point-on-wave switching.

Making it all work

The results of this will be evaluated over a fixed period and if found to be effective could be rolled out across the distribution network in the future.

If successful, it would be possible to switch off some transformers and reduce electrical losses on 33kV/11kV networks and resulting in significant cost savings.

What that means for the project now:

Commissioning of the first of the trial units saw the inrush current controlled to a consistent 15A.
