Senvion UK were responsible for providing full reactive power compliance for Kype Muir Wind Farm as part of their turbine supply contract.

The problem in detail

Due to the date of installation they also had to comply with the new Grid Code connection condition CC.A.7.2.3.2, a condition that requires the reactive compensation to be switched a number of times at 15 second intervals. This is not possible using standard capacitor banks.

Finding the solution

Senvion UK required a fully enclosed reactive power compensation system capable of dynamic switching. Further to this, initial studies highlighted a harmonic exceedance at the 7th harmonic order due to a resonance.

Enspec Power delivered a complete solution, including harmonic study support to design bespoke de-tuning reactors to solve the harmonic issue. The de-tuned banks included Point-on-Wave control coupled with vacuum contactors to allow dynamic switching and to fully satisfy CC.A.7.2.3.2.

The compensation system gave Kype Muir full reactive power compliance along with transient free switching through POW control.

Making it all work

The compensation system gave Kype Muir full reactive power compliance along with transient free switching through POW control. This ensures G5/4 compliant harmonic levels.

What that means for the project now:

The site achieved full reactive power compliance and our solution delivered dynamic reactive power capability at a fraction of the cost of an electronic STATCOM solution.

The site is CC.A.7.2.3.2 compliant with transient free energisations and inrush currents maintained to below 2pu versus typical capacitor bank inrush of in excess of 20pu.
