In November we began our business growth journey starting with asking our customers and our team for their views and feedback. The feedback was great and really valuable to us. We have always aimed to do a great job as a supplier, customer and as an employer, and it was fantastic to have confirmation that we are getting it right!

But we won’t rest on our laurels and will work hard to build on our achievements. We’ve set ourselves some challenging targets that will keep us firmly focused on growing Enspec. We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to complete our feedback sheets and for their nice comments. Best of all – our team told us we’re a great employer – so it’s official!

Not only has our customer base grown – so has the team…

We recently recruited Luke Adams as a trainee. Luke is 19 years old and very keen to follow in his Dad’s footsteps as an electrical engineer. To celebrate Luke getting the job he has been looking for since he left school, his Dad is buying him a brand new Nissan Juke which will arrive in January – nice one Luke! He enjoys watching football and is a Sunderland season ticket holder.

We also recently recruited Sue Watson and Gary Scott as our Export Managers to develop the Enspec brand overseas (more on this later) and we have just welcomed Heidi Williams onto the Enspec team as Financial Controller. Heidi is based at our St Helens office.

Early in 2012 we’ll be recruiting a marketing assistant to help implement our marketing and social media strategy.

Some of the best ideas come from our customers and when one of them said our products would be perfect for the Australian market we decided to investigate – and found they were right!

Over the years we’ve built up an impressive list of international customers and projects and in November we welcomed Sue and Gary onto the team as our Export Managers. Their first task was to investigate the Australian market…

We’ll be visiting Australia in March 2012 and already have lots of meetings lined up with some of the country’s biggest energy companies who are very interested in our products. We’ll let you know how we get along but so far we’re blown away (no pun intended!) by the level of interest in our products and services.

And just to continue the Australian theme, we send our very best wishes and congratulations to Ian Barrow, Enspec’s Field Engineer, and Georgia who travelled to Australia for their wedding in January. And no, we didn’t try to persuade Ian to fit in a couple of sales meetings while he was there (though it was a tempting thought!).

We’re delighted to have recently acquired a Lancashire cricket shirt signed by the members of their 2011 county championship winning team. We won it in an auction at a recent charity event in aid of the Lilac Centre in St Helens.

The Lilac Centre is a unique unit and is the only one of its kind across Cheshire and Merseyside hospitals and offers chemotherapy, cancer therapy and support to patients, along with alternative therapies including massage, yoga and reiki. The Lilac Centre has an impressive new home in the recently opened St Helens Hospital and cares for 150 patients each week.

We also currently subscribe to the S.A.F.C. foundation as well as sponsoring junior rugby in Warrington.

We’ll be at a number of exhibitions starting with the international Hannover Messe Energy Tradeshow in Germany 23-27 April 2012. If you are planning to visit, please let us know so we can arrange to meet up for a coffee and a chat – or even sample a glass of fine German beer!

We’re proud of our Investors in People status and continually seek to develop the skills within our team. With 50% of the Enspec team actively participating in training initiatives at any one time, we take new skills and development seriously.

Tony Cook, our Manufacturing Foreman is now half way through a Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management and hopes to graduate in 2012 before progressing to a final year top up of a full honours degree in Applied Management.

We recently ran two business growth workshops with the entire team to help us with our growth strategy and the ideas really flowed. The team came up with a set of values that we feel really capture what Enspec Power is as a business and an employer. During 2012 we’ll run regular team workshops to make sure we’re keeping on track for growth. We’ll also be introducing new career and training reviews for all our team to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge.

We’ve recently joined NOF Energy which is a well respected organisation with a great reputation in our key business sectors.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch….

Harmonic surveys come in many guises, but beware the ‘free’ harmonic survey – remember there is no such thing as a free lunch. Commonly used as a sales tactic, ‘free’ surveys often contain little useful data that invariably leads to the recommendation of costly equipment solutions even when no solutions are actually required.

A professional harmonic survey costs money but is an investment that provides payback. If the level of harmonic distortion is not detrimental to your system, an unbiased professional report will tell you so. Harmonics can be eliminated as the possible cause to your power quality issues and the need to install expensive harmonic mitigating equipment ruled out.

On the other hand, if your harmonic survey identifies excess harmonics as the root cause of your power quality problems, then the information and recommendations contained within the report will enable the necessary engineering design to provide the most cost-effective solution.
